The Life That Couldn't Swim Across the Ocean

CA$850.00

The Life That Couldn’t Swim Across the Ocean is my way of exploring the parts of me that will always belong to where I came from. The woman in the painting gazes to the side, her expression filled with longing and curiosity. On her head is an intricate Eastern European headdress—onion domes, sprawling fields, gardens, fairy tales, matrioshka dolls—all woven together to reflect the culture I grew up in.

I was born in Russia and lived there until I was 18. I carry my heritage like a second skin, shaping how I see the world and myself. This painting is not just about me—it’s about all of us who feel the pull of where we came from, even as we create new lives far from it. It’s a reflection on the ways our roots, memories, and stories define us and invites you to consider: what parts of your own story have stayed with you, quietly whispering like wind through the trees, waiting to be heard?

Original Painting - Oil on Canvas

The universal rules of womanhood go something like this: be polite; be thin; hide all signs of ageing; put all attention to your appearance; become a mother; don’t be too ambitious or loud; carefully craft every moment of your child’s day
